Collective term for the Japanese martial arts which prepare for battle or war

Bujutsu (Japanese: 武術, meaning "war, military art, technique") is the generic term for the old-style Japanese martial arts which focused on their application in battle. Once it was no longer necessary to learn the techniques for martial purposes, bujutsu evolved into budō which usually also incorporates a philosophy or "inner way".
