Aikido is a Japanese martial art that was developed in the first half of the 20th century by O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. It draws on ancient budo principles for unarmed self defense, staff and sword fighting. Aikido focuses on adequate reactions to attacks, while using the connection to work with the partners' energy without hurting them. The non-violent techniques express both respect and readiness towards the attacker.
Regular Aikido practice helps to stay fit and flexible. But it is more than a form of sport: it is an attitude towards life that extends to the world outside of the dojo. The martial art sharpens our sense for the dynamics of conflicts and enables us to respond both reasonably and self-confidently. Moreover, it nurtures an attentive, appreciative and polite mindset in dealing with our fellow human beings.
And it's also a lot of fun :-)
